Pakistan Court Sentences Two Individuals for Blasphemy Charges

In a recent development, a Pakistan court has delivered severe sentences in cases related to blasphemy, stirring controversy and sparking debates on freedom of expression within the country. According to a report, a 22-year-old student has been sentenced to death for sharing photos and videos on WhatsApp that depicted the Prophet Muhammad. Additionally, a 17-year-old has been handed a life sentence for the same offense.

The sentencing took place in the Lahore High Court in Pakistan, where the 22-year-old was condemned to death, while the 17-year-old received a life sentence. Blasphemy, a charge punishable by death in Pakistan, has been at the center of numerous contentious legal battles and societal debates. The Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) cybercrime unit filed a complaint in 2022, leading to the recent verdict issued by a local court in the city of Gujranwala, located north of Lahore.

The 22-year-old, whose identity remains undisclosed, was found guilty of preparing photos and videos containing disparaging statements about Muhammad and his wives. Meanwhile, the teenager, also unnamed, was convicted of sharing these materials. Notably, the 17-year-old escaped the death penalty due to his age, as confirmed by officials.
